Brian Sullivan (@MadManScouting)

Week 1 is in the books, and I somehow escaped with a better spread record than a straight up record. Weird how that works. This week is particularly tough. It was very tough for me to even find 5 games to make as my “Best Bets”, but these are my safest picks of the week.

All Spreads Via “TheScore” As Of 9/12/2018

Brian’s 5 Best Bets
Season Record (2-3)

Ravens (-1.0) @ Bengals

Spread – Ravens
S/U – Ravens

I’m a big believer in Baltimore at this point. Sure, Buffalo isn’t great, but Baltimore absolutely dominated them in the trenches on both sides. Cincinnati ran the ball well against Indianapolis, but at times they made the Colts look tougher on defense than they are. I expect a classic Andy Dalton prime time stinker here, even though it won’t necessarily be his fault.

Prediction – Ravens 23 Bengals 16

Chargers (-7.0) @ Bills

Spread – Chargers
S/U – Chargers

I hate giving up this many points. I really do. But the Bills are not built to handle Los Angeles. The Chargers defense will be underrated this week after getting cooked by Patrick Mahomes, but the difference between Mahomes and Peterman* is substantial. Chargers should roll Buffalo here by at least 2 scores.

Prediction – Chargers 27 Bills 13

*EDIT – It turns out Josh Allen will be starting, but the sentiment stands.

Patriots (-1.5) @ Jaguars

Spread – Patriots
S/U – Patriots

This one is tough. On one hand, the Patriots tend to struggle early in the season occasionally, and this is basically the Super Bowl for the Jaguars. On the other hand, how often do you get to pick New England while only giving up 2 points? Against one of the worst quarterbacks in football? Don’t bet with emotion, take the GOAT here.

Prediction – Patriots 24 Jaguars 14

Chiefs @ Steelers (-5.0)

Spread – Steelers
S/U – Steelers

This one is hard for me, since I’ve been injecting Patrick Mahomes hype into my veins after his Week 1 performance. But that’s the point. Vegas knows we saw that atrocity in Cleveland last week. Vegas knows we say Mahomes light up the NFL world in his official debut. Vegas is begging us to take the points here. Pittsburgh won’t turn the ball over 6 times again. Pittsburgh won’t be catastrophic on special teams like Los Angeles. Kansas City looked awful on defense last week, but we ignored it because their offense was so much fun. Mike Tomlin owns Andy Reid. Steelers win big.

Prediction – Steelers 42 Chiefs 27

Dolphins @ Jets (-3.0)

Sam Darnold is legit, which didn’t surprise me. The Jets defense is legit, which also didn’t surprise me. What did surprise me was how tough the Jets looked in the trenches on offense. Detroit might be soft, but New York looked significantly better on the offensive line then I expected. I watched Tennessee push Miami around last week. Miami made a few huge plays that won them the game, but they consistently struggled to get any pressure on Marcus Mariota. If they can’t pressure Darnold, he should shred this defense. Minkah Fitzpatrick is a monster though, I can’t let that slip by. Still, expect another statement win for the Jets.

Prediction – Jets 27 Dolphins 20
