This year’s rookies are proving that they are one of the better draft classes in recent years and it is being headlined by the sensational play of New York Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis has become the second option behind Carmelo Anthony and has racked up a pair of double doubles over the past week. He is 3rd in points per game and 2nd in rebounds per game amongst rookies. Ahead of him in both categories and asserting himself as a dominant player lately is Karl Anthony-Towns. Towns had a pair of big games against quality opponents including putting up 18 points on DeAndre Jordan one of the best defenders in the league, and 27 points against the Blazers. All the hype around Porzingis has quietly let the Minnesota rookie sneak into ROY talks. Jahlil Okafor is someone who has fallen off in the past week. Off that 2 game suspension he hasn’t gotten back in the flow of things on both sides of the ball. Although he still leads all rookies in points per game he has fallen back in the rankings. Justice Winslow didn’t have a good game offensively last time out against the Pacers but his presence is felt more on the defensive end. He provides great energy off the bench for a Heat team that looks like a contender in the East this year. Mudiay and Russell continue to struggle separate themselves as rookie guards in the league. Russell’s role on the Lakers is still unclear under head coach Byron Scott even after having one of his better games of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Mudiay continues to have turnover problems and has seen his point total fluctuate.

Some guys worth honorable mention are Devin Booker from the Suns who is shooting over 50% from the field and over 70% from 3 point range (on 21 attempts). Stanley Johnson is providing solid minutes off the bench for the Pistons and T.J. McConnell continues to play well for the Sixers. Although he’s seen his minutes decrease over the past week his ball distribution is great and he’s looking for his shot more aggressively.
