Georgia State Overview
Record – (6-6)
After finishing a disappointing 1-11 last season the Panthers made great strides this season. They came into the season with no real expectations other than the hope of making a bowl game and possibly competing for the Sun Belt title. While the Panthers were not able to win the Sun Belt they were able to go on a four game winning streak to finish fourth in the conference.
Players to Watch
Nick Arbuckle(QB) – Arbuckle has simply been great all year long. With the Panthers having a carousel at running back they have leaned heavily on their quarterback. He has passed the ball for over 4,000 yards and a QB rating of 154.5. He relied most on freshman Wr Penny Hart who had 71 receptions and over 1,000 receiving yards.
Tarris Batiste (S) – Batiste has played in all 12 games for Georgia State. The redshirt Senior leads the team in solo tackles (64), is third on the team in tackles for loss (6.5), and leads the team in interceptions (4). He also has 10 pass defended and 2 forced fumbles. Batiste has proven that when his team needs a big play he makes. We should look forward to hearing his name called often in this game.
How Georgia State Can Win
If Georgia State is going to win this game, they’ll have to do it in a shootout. They have relied on moving the ball and scoring the ball through the air and that should not change in this game. While they are facing the 2nd best pass defense in the nation they must rely on their strength.
San Jose State Overview
Record – (5-7)
You can not get much worse than the (3-9) spartans were last year. It was a very up and down year for Spartans as they did not win consecutive games once this year but somehow managed to get those 5 wins to make them bowl eligible. The one bright spot for the Spartans is the idea that they played most games very tightly including a one point loss to BYU.
Players to Watch
Tyler Ervin(RB) – Ervin has been really the only bright part to a very dismal Spartan offense. He averages 5.6 yards per cary, rushed for 1,469 yards and had 1 less rushing touchdown (13) than their starting QB had passing touchdowns (14). Ervin is also a threat out of the back field with 44 receptions on the season.
Mauri McKnight (S) – McKnight while only starting 11 games this year he has played in all 12. He led the team in solo tackles (71) and finished second on the team in total tackles. He also accounts for 1 of the 2 total interceptions the Spartans got this year, as well as leading the team with 2 forced fumbles. He is definitely a player to watch for as georgia state relies heavily on the passing the ball.
How San Jose State Can Win
Run the ball and run the ball a lot. They were ranked 56th in nation in running and while the Panthers are in the top 30 in the nation in both pass and rush defense they are significantly worse against the run. The Spartans are going to need to control the clock and not let the panthers have a lot of possessions if they want to win this game.
Final Prediction – Georgia State defeats San Jose State 35-27
